Whiplash

Early intervention is crucial for whiplash injuries to reduce the risk of chronic neck pain and other long-term complications. With a tailored physiotherapy program, patients can effectively manage their symptoms and promote a quicker recovery

About this condition

Whiplash is a neck injury due to forceful, rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck, like the cracking of a whip. This injury most commonly occurs during a rear-end auto accident, but the injury can also result from sports accidents, physical abuse, or other trauma. Whiplash may injure the neck muscles, ligaments, discs, nerves, and, in more severe cases, vertebrae.

What you may be feeling

Symptoms of whiplash can vary greatly but often include:
  • Neck pain and stiffness, worsening with movement.
  • Loss of range of motion in the neck.
  • Headaches, most often starting at the base of the skull.
  • Tenderness or pain in the shoulder, upper back, or arms.
  • Tingling or numbness in the arms.
  • Fatigue.
  • Dizziness.
  • Some people also experience blurred vision, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), sleep disturbances, irritability, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, and depression.
