Shoulder Post-Op Rehabilitation

Physiotherapy is a crucial component of recovery following shoulder surgery. Surgery addresses the structural problem, but it’s only the first step. Rehabilitation is what restores function. Whether it’s a rotator cuff repair, shoulder reconstruction (e.g. Bankart or Latarjet), or reverse shoulder replacement, rehabilitation helps protect the repaired structures while progressively restoring movement, strength, stability and function.

About this condition

Recovery timelines vary by procedure but a structured, guided rehabilitation is always essential – too much too soon can compromise the repair, while too little can lead to stiffness and muscle wasting. Working closely with your surgeon’s protocol and your physiotherapist is important to keep your recovery on track.

Some shoulder operations we commonly rehab, but are not limited to, include:

  • Rotator Cuff Repair
  • Bankart Repair
  • Shoulder Stabilisation
  • Labral Repair
  • SLAP Repair
  • Shoulder Reconstruction
  • Shoulder Replacement
  • Reverse Shoulder Replacement
  • Shoulder Arthroscopy

What you may be feeling

  • Pain and swelling around the shoulder, particularly in initial few weeks
  • Stiffness and reduced movement, especially after some time in a sling
  • Weakness, leading to difficulty with everyday activities like dressing, showering or eating.
  • Tightness around the shoulder, neck or upper back.
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Frustration associated with the recovery process
  • Reduced confidence in using the operated arm

Recovery is not always linear. You may have good days and bad days as you gradually increase your activity. Having the right rehabilitation plan can help you understand what to expect and how to safely progress.

How we can help you

Comprehensive post-operative assessment

Evaluating your shoulder mobility, strength, movement quality, and functional limitations to establish a clear starting point and guide the direction of the rehabilitation.

Individualised and protocol-guided rehabilitation planning

Creating a tailored plan around your procedure, healing stage, symptoms, lifestyle, and personal goals.

Movement and control retraining

Improving shoulder coordination, stability, and movement quality as your mobility returns.

Manual therapy

Using different hands-on techniques to help improve pain, stiffness, and mobility.

Targeted strengthening

Targeting weaknesses in individual muscles and progressively rebuilding the shoulder’s capacity for load.

Return-to-sport preparation

Developing the strength, control, and confidence required for a safe return to higher-level activities.
