Sciatica

Sciatica is characterised by pain radiating along the sciatic nerve from the lower back to the leg. Understand its causes and effective treatments, including stretches and pain management strategies.

About this condition

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg. Typically, sciatica affects only one side of your body. It occurs when the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed by a variety of causes, such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, or a bone spur on the spine.

What you may be feeling

Patients with sciatica may experience a range of symptoms that can vary in intensity:
  • Pain that radiates from the lower spine to the buttock and down the back of the leg, which can vary from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or excruciating discomfort.
  • Numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the affected leg or foot.
  • Pain that worsens with sitting, coughing, sneezing, or other sudden movements.
  • Difficulty moving the leg or foot, or reduced reflexes in the leg.

How we can help you

Exercise Therapy

Specific exercises to strengthen the muscles of the back, abdomen, and legs, as well as improve flexibility and posture. Stretching exercises for the lower back and piriformis muscle can also help relieve nerve compression.

Manual Therapy

Techniques such as spinal mobilisation or manipulation to help alleviate pain, improve spinal function, and reduce nerve irritation.

Education

Advising patients on posture and ergonomic changes to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve during daily activities.

Pain Relief Techniques

Application of heat or cold therapy to reduce inflammation and pain. TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) may also be used for pain management.

Soft Tissue Massage

To relieve muscle tension and reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve.

So, what next?

Physiotherapists tailor the treatment plan to the individual’s symptoms, the underlying cause of their sciatica, and their overall health. The goal is to alleviate pain, enhance mobility, and provide education to prevent future episodes of sciatica.
