Pelvic Support Dysfunction

Pelvic support dysfunction, or pelvic organ prolapse, involves pelvic organs descending from their normal position, causing discomfort. Symptoms include pelvic pressure and urinary difficulties. We provide specialised physiotherapy treatments including pelvic floor rehabilitation, manual therapy, education on posture and supportive devices, and pain management strategies to improve pelvic support and quality of life.

About this condition

Pelvic support dysfunction, also known as pelvic organ prolapse, occurs when the muscles and ligaments supporting the pelvic organs weaken or become stretched. This can cause one or more of the pelvic organs (bladder, uterus, rectum) to drop (prolapse) from their normal position and press against the vaginal walls. This condition is common, especially among women who have given birth, undergone pelvic surgery, or experienced significant weight changes.

What you may be feeling

If you have pelvic support dysfunction, you might experience symptoms such as a feeling of heaviness or pressure in the pelvic area, a bulge or protrusion in the vagina, discomfort or pain during intercourse, and difficulties with urination or bowel movements. You might also feel lower back pain and have trouble with activities that involve standing or lifting. These symptoms can lead to discomfort, embarrassment, and a decrease in quality of life.

How we can help you

Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation

We design personalised exercise programmes to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, which play a key role in supporting the pelvic organs. These exercises can help reduce symptoms and prevent further prolapse.

Manual Therapy

Our physiotherapists use hands-on techniques to improve muscle function, reduce pain, and enhance the support of the pelvic organs.

Education and Postural Advice

We provide guidance on proper posture, body mechanics, and techniques to minimise strain on the pelvic area and support pelvic health.

Lifestyle and Activity Modifications

We advise on lifestyle changes and activity modifications to help manage symptoms and improve daily functioning.

Pessary Fitting and Management

We offer advice and fitting for pessaries, which are devices inserted into the vagina to provide support for prolapsed organs.

Pain Management Strategies

We provide techniques to manage pain and discomfort associated with pelvic support dysfunction.
